About: A report on Tom Cruise’s documented meetings with members of the British royal family, from Princess Diana in 1992 to recent London premieres with the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Tom Cruise has crossed paths with the British royal family for more than three decades, appearing at premieres, charity dinners, jubilee events and, according to later reports, a private visit to Windsor Castle. The encounters have been widely photographed and quoted in British and international coverage, and they have resurfaced whenever the actor returns to London for a royal film performance.

The first well-documented meeting came in July 1992, when Princess Diana attended the London premiere of Far and Away. Photographs show Diana greeting Cruise and his then-wife, Nicole Kidman, outside the Empire cinema in Leicester Square. Contemporary accounts later noted that Diana and her sons watched the original Top Gun at home. Cruise attended Diana’s funeral in 1997, a fact restated in recent reports of his later meetings with her sons.

Cruise’s next widely reported royal encounter was in 2017, when he attended a Buckingham Palace dinner marking the 75th anniversary of the Outward Bound Trust. Coverage at the time and in later retrospectives said he met Prince Philip there and that the two spoke about flying. Cruise, a licensed pilot since the 1990s, has repeatedly described aviation as a shared interest with members of the family.

May 2022 brought several public appearances in quick succession. Cruise co-hosted A Gallop Through History, a Platinum Jubilee pageant at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, broadcast on ITV. Queen Elizabeth II was the guest of honour. Days later, on 19 May 2022, the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined Cruise at the UK premiere of Top Gun: Maverick in Leicester Square, a Royal Film Performance in aid of the Film and TV Charity. Cruise told reporters he and Prince William had “a lot in common,” adding, “We both love England and we’re both aviators, we both love flying.” Photographs showed him offering Catherine his hand on the steps. Reports also said he had arranged an earlier private screening for the couple.

That July, Cruise sat a few rows behind Catherine in the Royal Box at the Wimbledon women’s final. In 2023 he recorded a Coronation Concert message from a fighter jet, addressing King Charles III with the line, “Pilot to pilot, Your Majesty, you can be my wingman any time.”

British newspapers later reported that Queen Elizabeth II, disappointed not to have met Cruise at the jubilee pageant, invited him for a private tour of Windsor Castle and tea in the summer of 2022. Sources quoted by The Sunday Times and The Times said they “really hit it off,” that he was allowed to arrive by helicopter, and that a follow-up lunch was planned but did not take place before the Queen’s death on 8 September 2022. Buckingham Palace did not issue a detailed public account of a private tea. Those details therefore rest on unnamed briefings rather than an official palace statement.

In February 2024, Cruise and Prince William appeared together at the London Air Ambulance Charity Gala. William called him a “fellow pilot” and joked that Cruise should not borrow the new helicopters for a Mission: Impossible film. Official Wales social accounts posted a photograph of the pair. Cruise later recorded a video message for William’s Earthshot Prize, referring to the prince as a “dear friend.”

On 22 September 2026, William and Catherine joined Cruise again for the Royal Film Performance of Digger at the Odeon Luxe in Leicester Square. Coverage by the BBC, PA and other outlets described Cruise complimenting William’s velvet jacket and taking Catherine’s hand on the steps. Catherine wore the Queen Mother’s amethyst sautoir necklace and pearl earrings associated with Princess Diana. Cruise was quoted as saying of the couple, “They are lovely people and I have great respect for them.”

Taken together, the public record shows a long sequence of premieres, charity events and ceremonial appearances rather than a formal royal appointment. Aviation, film premieres and fundraising have been the consistent settings. Further reading on celebrity and royal coverage worldwide is collected at https://fashiontalktoday.com/.

Some private-visit details from 2022 have not been independently confirmed by the palace and should be read as reported claims.
